About an hour boat ride from Caye Caulker, Turneffe Atoll is the largest and most biologically diverse atoll in Belize. The atoll stretches 30 miles long and 10 miles wide. It is sparsely developed and the surrounding ocean waters and habitats are pristine. The region of Turneffe Atoll, Belize, is a must-see for all divers.
Protecting Turneffe Atoll Dive Sites
In 2012, the Belize Fisheries Department developed a management plan to protect the atoll, limit development and encourage sustainable dive tourism and fishing. Today, these Turneffe Atoll dive sites attract divers from all over the world. SCUBA divers will find that the visibility is excellent, ranging from 30 to 45 meters (100 to 150 ft.) on most days.
Thriving Marine Life
Turneffe Atoll, Belize, is the place to swim alongside large rays, turtles, eels, schools of snapper, horse-eye jack, and permit. Due to its isolation, coral life flourishes. As one customer put it: “It’s like diving through a forest of coral.” Specific dive site destinations vary. You’ll never forget your experience exploring the marine life at Turneffe Atoll’s dive sites.
Excellent Equipment and Service
I did a 2 dive trip to the Turneffe Atoll and had a great time. Turneffe has some great coral at moderate depths, and doesn’t take as long to get to as Lighthouse and Blue Hole. The BDS boat is the best dive boat I’ve been on. There is a separate covered seating area with tables, away from all the gear. This made it easy to chat with other divers on the 1+ hour ride to the Atoll. The crew took good care of us, handling all set-up and providing a full briefing about the sites. The staff on shore were organized and helpful as well. This is an all-around professional operation. It is more expensive than some of the alternatives – but I think you get real value for that extra money. Just the fact that their big boat can go out on windy days that others cannot is very valuable.
