Scuba Diving in San Pedro Area
Big Fish Near San Pedro
The San Pedro has plenty of great scuba diving inside and outside of Hol Chan Marine Reserve. This area was one of the first in Belize to truly develop its dive sites. Mooring buoys are placed at 500 meters/1,640 ft. intervals from the southern tip of Ambergris Caye almost to the Mexico border. Decades of scent sticks and feeding have attracted a loyal following of nurse sharks, groupers, permit and moray eels here. You will also find hundreds of species of fish and a wide variety of corals, sponges, algae and sea turtles. This site is close to Caye Caulker but due to sea swells is more advanced than Turneffe Atoll dive sites.
Abundant Fish, Corals, Sponges and Sea Turtles
Esmerelda is the most popular dive site in this area. We try to follow the fish as they move from site to site. Many of our divers enjoy the quieter areas, such of Tacklebox or Tres Cocos to the north or Cypress Tunnels to the south. The San Pedro area as the Belize Barrier Reef is known for its friendly nurse sharks and large grouper. The topography of the area has a sloping shelf, dramatically cut with deep canyons and crevices, winding to the reef’s outer edge where the continental shelf begins its plunge into the Caribbean trench.
Excellent Diving Experience
Just back from diving with BDS last week. Enjoyed it immensely! First let me say that in 29 years of diving in 5+ countries, they have the nicest dive boats I’ve ever been on! Had a small group on day 1 – just our family of 4 and one other man. Dove Esmerelda Gardens and Cypress Tunnels in the San Pedro Area. Saw lots of sharks, eagle ray, other smaller rays, eels etc. Day 2 had a much larger group on the boat, including one certification class. We were divided into groups and had 7 of us diving together. Went to Turneffe Atoll which had beautiful wall dives with large schools of fish. All in all the crews on both days were excellent. Gear was totally fine and all taken care of for us. Would dive with them again in a heartbeat!
